Abstract

The history of the external relationship between Wagner and Nietzsche can be told in a few words: Nietzsche met Wagner in Leipzig at the beginning of November 1868 at the house of the composer's brother-in-law, Hermann Brockhaus. Both were very impressed, and when he said goodbye to Nietzsche Wagner invited him to visit him in Switzerland, where he was then living with his partner Cosima Liszt, who had not yet divorced her husband, the orchestra leader Hans von Bülow.
